  • To Whom It May Concern:

For years‚ Turkish Football was under the shadow of Turkish Politicians‚ and was not able to make independent decisions. Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had been warned by Fifa in the 1990s and finally it took a bold law‚ and some courage to make TFF an independent institution.
Since then‚ TFF was more or less independent‚ governing itself and Turkish Football.

All of this however‚ has taken a drastic downturn recently when Turkish Politicians‚ led by the governing party decided to be involved in football affairs once again. This was possibly due to the upcoming general elections in Turkey‚ where football can be (and was) turned to a large sack of votes for the governing party.

The city of Trabzon had been a big political battleground in the past elections‚ and leading to the election date‚ last years league competition had been marred by statements of politicians claiming how Trabzonspor should be the champion‚ and how they‚ and only they deserved to be champions. These statements were widely published in the sports media‚ and the owners of statements included (but not limited to) Mehmet Ali Sahin-Head of Turkish Parliament‚ Faruk Nafiz Ozak-Minister of Sports&ex-president of Trabzonspor‚ and various ministers and public officials. The whole governing party campaigned behind Trabzonspor‚ and made it very clear to the whole Turkish football community that they wished for Trabzonspor to be the champions. This translated to the football media‚ community and referees as protect Trabzonspor‚ and seemed that it would work until another team had made an unprecedented run‚ showing great disciplin&stamina and stole the show from Trabzonspor and the Turkish government.

Though the elections has passed‚ the above mentioned heroics of that team seems to have created a vandetta against them. Right after the elections‚ the TFF Chairman Mr. Mahmut Ozgener was forced/threatened by the government to resign‚ and a new administration was formed in TFF under Mr. Mehmet Ali Aydinlar. This gentleman knows the political power that took him to the office‚ and wishes to serve that power. Now‚ under the disguise of match-fixing‚ Turkish government is punishing the club that stole the show‚ by using the police force and law enforcement against it. Turkish politicians are exerting great pressure on TFF to relegate the champions of last year WITHOUT a legal decision of the court of law.

The above mentioned involvement of Turkish government in football affairs is in stark contrast with the FIFA statutes and the relevant UEFA regulations. The pressure of Turkish government representatives on TFF president is a clear sign that Turkish government does not recognize that football matters can only be decided by the TFF. The newly formed TFF is clearly afraid of actions of the Turkish government. The fact that prior TFF chairman Mr Ozgener is wanted as a suspect by the court is another threat for TFF‚ whose subordinated football structures are not being respected. This clearly constitutes another example of interference from the government in football affairs.

As a devout member of the universal football family‚ I call on UEFA to act and support TFF against the tyrant behavior of the Turkish government on Turkish Football.

    Best Regards‚
