My name is Cherlyn and I'll be glad to assist you with your concern. I understand that you cannot sign in to Windows Live Messenger and you are receiving an error code 800706be. I know this is important to you so I will do my best to help you in this matter. It looks like your Windows Live Messenger is having trouble connecting to the service. What we need to do is to change some settings to try to fix the issue. I included steps to check your date and time settings and steps to configure your firewall which are the most common causes of sign in issues. Please follow the steps below: A. Check time and date settings: 1. Click Start, click Run, type control timedate.cpl and then click OK. 2. In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings on the computer are correct, and then click OK. B. Configure Windows Live Messenger through the most common firewalls: http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com Click the link for the firewall that is installed on your computer, and then follow the steps on the screen. If you are not sure which firewalls you have installed on the computer, click Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then scroll through the list of installed programs. Some popular firewall vendors include Norton, McAfee, and Zone Alarm. Note: If you are using an earlier version of Windows Live Messenger the application is installed in the location: "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" If you are using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 and later then the application is installed in the location: "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" Please take note of these locations when allowing Messenger through your personal firewall. We have also published steps for specific sign-in error codes that users encounter most often. We encourage you to sign in again and note down the error code you are receiving on sign-in. Go tohttp://messenger-support.spaces.live.com and click on the link Messenger sign-in errors. Click on the appropriate link based on the sign-in error code you are receiving. C. Delete Windows Live Messenger related cache files: 1. Change the Microsoft Windows Explorer settings. To do this, use one of the following methods: a. With your mouse, right-click the Start button, and then click Explore to open Windows Explorer. b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. c. On the View tab, in the Advanced settings list, select Show hidden files and folders under Hidden Files and Folders. d. Clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box. e. Click OK to close the Folder Options window. 2. Delete the extraneous files from the Windows Live Contact folder. To do this, follow these steps: Note: Before doing these steps, make sure to exit Windows Live Messenger and that it is not running on the background. To double-check this, open the Task Manager window and check whether the msnmsgr.exe is running on Processes. If it is, select the application and click End Process. If you are prompted, click Yes. To open the Task Manager: Click Start and then Run. Type taskmgr.exe and click OK. a. Right-click Start, and then click Explore to open the Windows Explorer window. b. In the Windows Explorer window, locate the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\ Your Windows logon name \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft Note: In these examples, Windows Logon name is the logon name that you use to sign in to Windows. c. Delete the Windows Live Contacts folder. Re-launch Windows Live Messenger and try to sign in again. Verify if the issue remains. If the issue is not resolved, we'll need more information about what could be causing your sign in issue. An error message or code would really help. Please answer the following questions: 1. How are you connected to the internet when you are experiencing this problem? - DSL, cable modem, wireless, 3G Wireless data card, dial-up etc 2. If you are on a Home network, do you have multiple computers on the same network using the same Internet connection (i.e using a Router) and are they all experiencing the same error when you attempt to sign into Messenger from these machines? 3. Are other users who sign onto the same machines experiencing the same error? If the issue is not resolved, we need you to generate logs that would help us determine the exact cause for this issue and find the appropriate solution for it. I made the steps as easy to follow as possible. Please follow the steps provided below: To know the version of Messenger you are using: In the Messenger main window, go to Help, then click About Messenger. For MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger Version 2008 (Build 8.5.01320) and lower: Please visit this link and follow the steps to generate and collect the connectivity logs. How to collect connectivity logs: http://messenger-support.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!8B3F39C76A8B853F!11956.entry For Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8050.1202): 1. Click on Tools then Options. 2. Click on Connection. 3. On Connection Settings section, click on Advanced Settings button. 4. On Connection Logging section click on Clear Log button to erase previous logging. 5. Try to sign into Windows Live Messenger Beta again to reproduce the error you are experiencing. Note: You will not be able to sign in. 6. Go through steps 1 to 4, this time click on View Log button instead of Clear Log. This will open the connectivity logging in Notepad. 7. In Notepad, click on File then Save as. select Desktop as the location of the file that will be saved. There is no need to change the file name. 8. Click on Save. 9. Close all windows then attach the msnmsgr.txt file to your response. How to Zip a Text file and Send as an Attachment: 1. After collecting the connectivity logs (labeled as: msnmsgr.txt), locate where the connectivity logs is saved. 2. Right-Click on the file. 3. Select Send To; then select Compressed (zipped) Folder. 4. A new file will then appear on your folder. 5. Attach the newly created zipped folder when replying to this email. Note: The option to send an attachment usually resembles a paper-clip. Note: You do not need to successfully sign in to Windows Live Messenger, you just need to click the sign-in icon and the log will automatically be generated. This will give us an idea of the error that has occurred during the signing in process. Should you have any other questions or if you need further assistance regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to contact us again by replying directly to this e-mail. Thank you for contacting Windows Live Messenger Technical Support. Have a great day. Sincerely, Cherlyn Windows Live Messenger Technical Support
