    USB Flash Drive

    Now if you are like me and do not happen to have a spare optical drive with a 5.25 enclosure/usb adapter then you are forced to use an alternative method to installing windows on your wind. Note that you can also use the this section to make a flash drive bootable to install a bios update.
    Feel free to comment if you have suggestions.

    What you will Need
    - A flash drive with enough capacity to hold your nLite image source (so it can copy from the hard drive or burned copy).

    Bootsect.exe updates the master boot code for hard disk/usb drive partitions to switch between BOOTMGR and NTLDR.
    - PeToUSBhttp://www.2shared.com/file/2581436/a131cd33/PeToUSB_3007.html orhttp://depositfiles.com/files/6613523
    PeToUSB is a Win32 GUI application for formatting and making bootable, USB Flash Memory Drives and USB HardDisks.


    Getting Started
    Insert your flash drive and make sure windows can see and has mapped a drive letter for it.
    Save the needed files from above to a directory and extract each zip.
    Now copy the PeToUSB.exe file to the usb_prep8 folder.
    Go into the usb_prep8 folder and double click on 'usb_prep8.cmd'.

    Now you should see a window that opened that looks like:

    Press any key to continue.
    Now you should get a screen that looks similar to:

    These settings are pre-configured, it should have auto detected your flash drive.
    Click Start to have it format your flash drive, and press Yes to continue.

    It will then prompt you to cilck Yes one last time. Realize that it will format your flash drive (please don't cry if you forgot to backup/save the contents before you preform this)

    Once the format is complete DO NOT close the window just leave everything as it is and open a command prompt from your start menu (type cmd in the search bar or run box depending on your version of windows.).

    Navigate to the location of bootsect.exe that you have saved.
    Once there, type "bootsect.exe /nt52 G:"
    NOTE G: is the drive letter for my USB stick if yours is different you need to change it accordingly.

    What this part does is write the correct boot sector to your USB stick, this allows your PC to boot from the USB stick without it nothing works.

    Please note: When running the bootsect.exe command you cannot have any windows open displaying the content of your USB stick, if you have a window open bootsect.exe will be unable to lock the drive and write the bootsector correctly.

    If all went well you should see "Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes."

    Now you can close this bootsect command prompt (don't close the usbprep8 one by mistake).
    Also you can close the PeToUSB window, when you close this window the usbprep8 command prompt window should look like (If it doesn't try pressing enter to get to it):

    Now you need to enter the correct information for numbers 1-3.

    Press 1 and then enter. A folder browse window will open for you to browse to the location of you WinXP nLite image source files. (aka your cdrom drive with xp cd/nlite image disc in or if you still have the files on your hard drive you can point it to there)
    Press 2 and enter a letter not currently assigned to a drive on your PC.
    Press 3 and enter the drive letter of your USB flash drive.
    Press 4 to start the process.

    The script will ask you if its OK to format drive R: (the drive used for option 2, a virtual drive).

    This is just a temp drive the program creates to cache the windows installation files. Press Y then enter.

    Once it's done formating press enter to continue again, you can now see the program copying files to the temp drive it created.

    Once this is done press enter to continue again.

    Next you will see a box pop up asking you to copy the files to USB drive. Click Yes.

    Once the script has completed copying your files over to your flash drive (this will take awhile), a pop-up window asking if you would like to USB drive to be preferred boot drive. Click Yes.

    Now you will get another pop-up window asking if you would like to unmount the virtual drive. Click Yes.

    Okay, now back at the usbprep8 command window, press any key twice to close out of the window.

    Now you should have your flash drive bootable and has your nlited XP source files on the drive. The 'extra' folder that you may have added will not automatically copy over. Manually copy this folder to the flash drive. Here is my flash drive after I copied my MSI (contains the drivers/manual/bios/utility) folder to the drive.

    Now you are ready to install windows.

    Installing Windows / Boot from USB
    Stick your flash drive into your Wind (in the proper spot) and power on your Wind (might want to have it plugged into AC also).
    Press DEL for the BIOS, go over to the Boot section and set the first boot option to "USB HardDisk". Exit and save changes.
    Select the option for "TXT Mode Setup Windows XP, Never unplug USB-Drive Until After Logon"

    From this point on it is just like any other windows XP installation delete all partitons and recreate the primary partition and format it using NTFS. Make sure you delete ALL partitions and recreate a single partition or you will get the hal.dll error message when trying to start the GUI part of the Windows install.

    Once the GUI portion of setup is complete you will again have to boot into GUI mode this will complete the XP installation and you will end up at you XP desktop. It is very important that you DO NOT REMOVE THE USB STICK before this point. (otherwise you will have to re-do the install)

    *If you followed my nLite settings*

    If you are prompted for a username/password the default username is Administrator and the password is left blank.

    When logging in for the first time it is not uncommon to see an 'Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b6bf9c 4 75b6bf9c 75b6bf9c' error. Just press continue as it finishes building the profile.
    You should only see this error the one time.

    Go to the control panel and change the task bar to Classic view. My nLite taskbar settings should make much more sense now.

    Copy over that MSI folder with all the drivers/extras you wanted before you start installing the drivers. The chipset driver will 'install' usb 2.0 and other system bus.
    Once you can see your start menu it is safe to remove the usb stick and reboot to make sure everything worked.

    You can revert the boot order back if you would like, also note that your boot menu will now have a section for usb boot. I turn off my OS selection option to speed up my boot time.

    Install the drivers in order, rebooting after each one to ensure everything is well.


    Just rough estimates, I plan on looking further into this.
    Stock MSI Wind u100, from powered off to booting into windows xp home and launching IE took around ~58 secs.
    Stock MSI Wind u100, from powered off to booting into nlited windows xp pro and launching IE took around ~40 secs.

    This can easily be reduced by then turning off services and other things that start when windows does.

  • Ben de bugün Acer da kullandığım tarayıcı ve posta programlarını daha çok beğendiğim için, eski pc deki explorer7 ve 6 sürümlerini kaldırıp, Firefox ve Tunderbird kurdum... Fakat nasıl becerdiysem sağ alttaki ses düğmesi ve wirelles simgesi artık görünmüyor. Ayarlarda işaretlesem dahi çıkmıyor :)
  • partition magic programi hdd ye zarar vermiyor değil mi?
  • Zarar verme riski her zaman var...
  • hdd yi bölerken sürekli hata veriyor program kafayı yiyecem.
  • başka nasıl bölebilirim? format mı atmam gerekiyor? gerçi nasıl atıcam bununla format bilmiyorum, bende xp yok, usb disk var. nasil atiyoruz?

  • en sonunda harici dvd yazıcı aldım xp yi öyle yükledim fakat indirdiğim driverların içinde ses ve wireless driver ı yok arkadaşlar. yardımcı olabilirmsiniz?
    netten aradım bulamadım :S
