Fenerbahce was founded nearly a century ago in the province of Kadikoy in Istanbul. The founders were Mr. Nurizade Ziya Songulen, Mr. Ayetullah and Mr. Necip Okaner. This group of individuals founded the club secretly in order to keep a low profile and not get into any trouble with the strict Ottoman rule. So strict in fact that the Sultan, Abdulhamit the 2nd, forbid that the Turkish youth may not set up a club nor engage in the game of football played by the English families that was watched in envy.

After the first meeting of the founders however, Nurizade Ziya Songulen is elected the first President, whilst Mr. Ayetullah is the General Secretary and Mr Necip Okaner assumes General Captaincy. The first emblem of the club is the Lighthouse which is situated on Fenerbahce cape whilst the first colours of the club are the colours of the daffodils, white and yellow, scattered around the Fenerbahce peninsula. The emblem and colours were to be changed in 1910 when the badge was redesigned by Topuz Hikmet and the colours were changed as Yellow and Navy.

Until a change of legislation in 1908, Fenerbahce's activities are run under strict secrecy. After this date however, the new law requires that clubs must register in order to exist legally. From that day on, the club was to take its place amongst the top of the Turkish club's and achieve much success.

Fenerbahce Sports Club's first football team included Asaf, Ziya Hasan, Sami, Ayetullah, Mazhar, Necip Fethi, Galip, Huseyin, Hasan and Nevzat. This team joined the Istanbul League in 1909 but achieved nothing in its first three seasons. In the 1912-1913 season a team with Ali Said, Galip, Arif, Izzi, Huseyin, Sabri, Hikmet, Said, Hasan Kamil, Nuri and Mico win the first championship of the club. Apart from being the first championship it had more significance as it was won without a single defeat throughout the season.

    LEGENDARY ATHLETES
There are legendary athletes that have served Fenerbahce Sports Club throughout its history. To inform and educate our young supporters and to remind our older ones, we have prepared our "Legendary Athletes" section.

    Lefter Küçükandonyadis
Born in Istanbul in the year 1925, he began football at Taksim. In 1974 he transferred to Fenerbahce. He's played at Fiorentina in Italy and Nice in France. On his return to Turkey he once again played at Fenerbahce. Wearing the navy and yellow colours, Lefter has won 2 Istanbul Professional League and 3 Turkish Championships. He has also been the top goalscorer of Turkey. Lefter's scored a total of 423 goals for Fenerbahce. He's worn the national jersey 46 times, nine times of which he was captain, and has scored 22 goals. Lefter is also the first person to receive the Football Federation's "Golden Honour Medallion". After quitting football in 1963, he managed Egaleo of Greece and Johannesburg of South Africa. In Turkey he's managed Samsunspor, Orduspor, Mersin Idmanyurdu and Boluspor. With his footballing skills, he's earned the nickname 'Ordinarius'. A role model for everyone, Lefter has also been a subject to a saying due to his huge goal scoring talent; "Ver Lefter'e yazsin deftere", meaning "Give it to Lefter and he'll put it on the sheet".

    Can Bartu
The name Can Bartu takes its place in both Fenerbahce's football and basketball history. He is the first and only athlete to have worn both the Football National Team and the Basketball National Team's jersey. Can Bartu was born in Istanbul on the 30th January 1936. He began his sporting career with basketball at Fenerbahce. Thanks to Fikret Arican, he moved to football where he had many successful performances with Fenerbahce. In 1961 he transferred to Italy's Fiorentina. He later played at Venezia and Lazio. He mesmerised with his technique and elegant style of play. In 1967 he returned to Fenerbahce. He played a total of 326 games with the Yellow Canaries and scored 162 goals. He has even played in goal for the national team, when keeper Turgay was injured in the last few minutes of the Turkey-Romania game in 1958 he went in goal. He is also the first Turkish player to have played in a European up final (Fiorentina-Glasgow Rangers, 1.1.1961). After being capped at international level 26 times, Can Bartu retired from professional football in 1970. He still kept himself within football by becoming a sports writer. Known amongst his Italian fans as 'Senior Bartu" for his classy dress sense he has established himself as one of the all time greats. He is currently an active Sports Columnist at Sabah newspaper.
