  • Cup glee for Galatasaray
    Wednesday, 11 May 2005
    By Türker Tozar

Galatasaray SK have won the Turkish Cup for the 14th time in their history by defeating Turkish Superleague leaders and city rivals Fenerbahçe SK 5-1 in the final at the Atatürk Olympic stadium.

    Ribéry magic
The first half saw Franck Ribéry's magic work for Galatasaray as the French midfield player opened the scoring on 16 minutes with a powerful left-foot drive before providing Necati Ates the chance to score the second goal.

    Luciano reply
On 38 minutes a Deniz Baris own goal seemed to signal the end of Fenerbahçe's hopes of lifting the trophy. However, Brazilian defender Fabio Luciano pulled a goal back just three minutes later to close the deficit before the interval.

    Sükür strikes
The opening stages of the second period were less evenful, before veteran striker Hakan Sükür then struck twice in the final 20 minutes, finding the net on 71 and 88 minutes, to put the result beyond any doubt.

    History repeats
Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe's 22-year Turkish Cup drought continued with their fourth final defeat at the hands of Galatasaray. The two sides will meet again in a Turkish Superlegue fixture in Sükrü Saracoglu stadium in ten days.

    Galatasary thrash Fener in final

ISTANBUL, May 11 (Reuters) - Hakan Sukur struck twice as Galatasaray hammered Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce 5-1 on Wednesday to win the Turkish Cup for the 14th time in their history.
The two clubs are also vying for the league title, Fenerbahce leading Galatasaray by four points with three matches left.

The game was played at the same Istanbul stadium which will host the Champions League final on May 25.

The media billed it as a dress rehearsal for the final between AC Milan and Liverpool in terms of security and transport preparations, although there were only 18,000 fans in the 70,000-capacity stadium.

French midfielder Franck Ribery opened the scoring for Galatasaray after 16 minutes, firing a shot from the edge of the area past keeper Rustu Recber.

Galatasaray doubled their lead eight minutes later when Ribery set up a goal for Necati Ates.

An own goal from Fenerbahce defender Deniz Baris made it 3-0 following a 38th-minute shot from Hakan.

Brazilian defender Fabio Luciano pulled one back for Fenerbahce before halftime, shooting beyond keeper Faryd Mondragon after a cross by Alex de Souza.

Hakan extended Galatasaray's lead in the 73rd minute, controlling a cross before striking the ball into the net.

The experienced Turkey striker sealed the win in the dying minutes with his second goal of the game.
